Ask a sign of the Lord thy God
The prophet Isaiah’s challenge to Ahaz King of Judah: Ask a sign of the Lord thy God. Isaiah 7:1-16.
Ahaz was a wicked king.
Ahaz made and worshiped idols.
God’s judgement: He was defeated at the hands of Syria.
Ahaz increased his sin and sought help from Assyria paid for with gold from the temple.
Ahaz declines to ask for a sign but Isaiah insists on giving the sign:
God is not to be rebuffed. Only He can deliver.
The sign given: Behold a Virgin shall conceive and bring forth a Son and shall call His name Immanuel, which is interpreted God with us.
The promised sign was fullfillment of the Davidic Covenant by the coming of the Messiah to redeem sinful man. Matthew 1:18-25.
Jesus calls sinners, not the self-righteous to repent.
