Parable of the unmerciful servant.

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant Matthew 18:21-27.

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”

22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[a]

23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[b] was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’

27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

Triumphal Entry of Jesus John 12:1-18, Mark 11:1-11

The last 10 chapters of John’s gospel deals with the last week of Jesus’s life.

Passover was a major Jewish holidy. The week of passover sees Jews streaming to Jerusalem.

Six days before Passover Jesus on the way to Jerusalem stops at Bethany where Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead.

Lazarus & his sisters Mary & Martha made Him a supper. Many Jews came to see Jesus and Lazarus.

The next day “much people heard that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees went forth to meet Him and cried. HOSANNA: BLESSED IS THE KING OF ISRAEL THAT COMETH IN THE NAME OF THE LORD”

The Jews were hoping that Jesus, the Son of King David, would be the new King of Israel that would deliver Israel from the rule of the Roman Empire.

Jesus makes a statement that surprises the people: “Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour, but for this cause came I unto this hour…and if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me ” John 12:27&32.

The people answered him: “ we have heard out of the law that Christ abideth forever: how sayest thou, the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?” John 12:34.

Tha people were hoping for and expecting a new eartly Davidic kingdom to deliver them from Rome.

Jesus came to die for sinners, redeem sinful man and restore man’s fellowship with God-His first coming.

Christ will come again. The second coming of Christ will restore and complete the Davidic covenant.

It will fulfill God’s promise to David in 2 Samuel 7:12-13. “And when thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”

The Burning Heart.

POST RESURRECTION APPEARANCES OF JESUS. Luke 24:13-32.

Jesus made 10 appearances in 40 days after His resurrection including Cleopas and the othe disciple on the way from jerusalem to Emmaus. They were not convinced of Jesus’s resurection.

The two disciples were dejected 3 days after the crucifiction saying: “We had hoped that it had been He that should have redeemed Israel… it has been 3 days since these things were done” vs.21. They had lost hope in the Messiah whom they hoped would deliver Israel from the rule of the Roman Empire.

Jesus explained to them the messages of the old testament of Moses and the prophets explaining scripture as it related to the plan of redemption.

Jesus is asked to eat supper with them. “He took bread and blessed it and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and he vanished out of their sight.”

And they said one to another: “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked with us…”

They went back to Jerusalem and said to the 11 Apostles: “THE LORD IS RISEN INDEED.”

Raising of Laz

arus

Lazarus’s sisters reach out to Jesus: They send a message to Jesus: "Lord behold he whom thou lovest is sick."

It was Mary that anointed Jesus with ointment and wiped His feet with her hair.

Jesus waited for 2 days then headed for Bethany.

Lazarus dies. Friends & neighbors come to comfort mary & Martha.

Jesus arrives. Martha says to Jesus:"if Thou hadst been here my brother would not havd died. I know whatsoever Thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee."

Mary then came fell at Jesus’ feet weeping.

JESUS WEPT. The only record of Jesus weeping.

Why did Jesus weep? He knew He would be raising Lazarus from the dead. Jesus shows His love for humanity.

Did He regret delaying His coming to Bethany? No. That was planned. He inteded to raise him from the dead.

Jesus says “take away the stone” Martha says “he stinketh having been dead 4 days”

Jesus prays: “Father I thank Thee that thou has heard me…because of the people that stand by I said it that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Jesus then cries with a loud voice, “Lazarus come forth”. He that was dead came forth bound with graveclothes.

Jesus says unto them: “Loose him and let him go”

Many of the Jews which came believed on Him.

THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST

The Gospel-Teachings of Christ

THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST-brief outline of the Message given at the church in Damascus, 5 Sept. 1980.

For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.

Rom. chapter 1: marvelous description of sin & the human heart.

The Gospel-good news: the greatest news the sinful world has ever heard.

Christ is the annointed Savior & Redeemer, annointed by God The Father.

The Gospel is the demonstration of the power of God unto salvation by Jesus Christ to all who believe.

What then constitutes this Gospel of Christ?

  1. His life-in His life He is our example.

  2. In His death He is our Redeemer.

  3. In His burial He is our scapegoat.

  4. In His resurrection He is our justification.

  5. In His ascension He is our head & guide.

  6. In His coming again He is our hope.

FOR I AM NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST-THE POWER OF GOD UNTO SALVATION.

IS GOD STILL SPEAKING TO MAN

See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh. Heb. 12:25.

God spoke to Moses from mount Sinai. Ex. ch. 19.

God spoke when Jesus was baptized. Mt. 3:17. This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.

God speaks through the Word. Both Old testament and New Testament.

It has been said “The new is in the old contained, the old is in the new explained.

Augustine through his writings has influenced the church more than any man since the apostle Paul.

In his youth he was a profligate. His mother Monica was a Godly woman. He went to Rome and later to Milan.

One day he was sitting in a garden in agony of mind. He heard a voice saying “take the book and read”

He believed it was the voice of God and immediately began to study the Word of God.

Later he discovered that it was a young girl arguing with a friend.

Martin Luther a pious monk was climbing a long stairs as an act of penance. He heard a voice “the just shall live by faith.

It was the voice of memory speaking the Word of God. Luther jumped to his feet and entered into the light of salvation

How is one to know the voice of God?

The voice of God is always reasonable. “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy lade. I will give you rest.

The voice of God is always kind. Peter denied him. Paul persecuted Him. The prodigal was welcomed by his father.

God’s voice is consistent.

God’s voice is the voice of power. Healing the centurian’s servant. Raising the widow’s son.
