Paul’s Prison Epistles

The Apostle Paul wrote four Epistles during his first imprisonment in Rome.

  1. Ephesians. Paul mentions his imprisonment in Ephesians 3:1-8.

  2. Philippians. Paul mentions his imprisonment in Phlippians 1:13-17.

  3. Colosssians. Paul mentions his imprisonment in Colossians 4:2-6.

  4. Philemon. Paul mentions his imprisonment in this letter in Philemon vs1. He pleads with his friend and fellow laborer Philemon to forgive and receive Onesimus back as a brother in Christ. vs10-19.

Paul’s First imprisonment in Rome was due to Jewish leaders in Jerusalem wanted to kill Paul, but he appealed to Ceasar because he was a Roman citizen. Acts 21:27-39 & 22:25.

After two years under house arrest in Rome, he was release in the year A.D. 62 because the Jewish accusation was not accepted by the Roman emperor Nero. Paul spent 2 years in his own hired house “preaching and teaching things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ.” Acts 28:30-31.

Paul’s Second imprisonment came after christians were blamed for a massive fire in Rome. Paul languished in the Mamertine prison for a couple of years before he was beheaded because of his ststus as a Roman citizen. This was probably in AD 68.
