Abraham’s guests in eternity
Jesus and the Roman centurian. Matthew 8:5-13. Luke 7:1-10
The Roman centurion’s request of Jesus:
He sends elders of the Jews to plead with Jesus to heal his servant of his palsy.
They plead with Jesus to heal the servant of the centurion who has been gracious to the Jews and built their synagogue.
Jesus’s response: I will come and heal him.
The centurion’s surprising respone:
“Lord I am not worthy that Thou shoudest come under my roof. Only say the word and my servant shall be healed.”
I am a man “under authority, having soldiers, and I say to one go and he goeth…”
Jesus’s surprising response:
1. “…I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.”
2. “…Many shall come from east and west and sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast forth into the outer darkness …” Matthew 8:11-12.
3. The kingdom of heaven is the eternal kingdom of Jesus Christ the son of Abraham, fulfilling the promise to Abraham “in thee shall all the families of the earth be blest.” Genesis 12:3.
4. The earthly Jewish kingdom rejected Christ. “He came to His own but His own received Him not.” John 1:11.
