The shepherd delivering the sheep. I Sam 17:34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his fathers sheep and there came a lion & a bear and took a lamb…and I delivered it out of his mouth…
For protection of the shepherd and the sheep from danger and predators. Ezek 34:7-16, 23…My flock became a prey…because there was no shepherd…and I will set up one shepherd…he will feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.
For correction of the wayward sheep. II Sam. 12:1-7,13. The prophet Nathan is sent to King David after his adultery with Bathsheba and the death of Uriah. A traveler came to the rich man and he spared to take of his own flock, but took the poor mans lamb and dressed it for the man that came to him…
The shepherd staff
Gives comfort to the shepherd and the sheep. John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice…and they follow me…and I give unto them eternal life…the sheep recognize the shepherd’s voice.
Used for guiding the sheep to walk in the way. Psalm 81:13 Oh that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my way.
Used to find the lost sheep and deliver a sheep from a crevice or thorny bush. Matt 18:12-13 if a man have 100 sheep, and one of them is gone astray, doeth he not leave the 99 and go into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray.
Opens the door for the sheep. John 10:7 Jesus said unto them again, verily, verily I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
