Jesus laments over Jerusalem

History of the City of Jerusalem.

  1. Jerusalem has several interpretations including City of Peace.

  2. Jerusalem has existed since 3000 BC, first settled near Gihon Spring.

  3. King David captured Jerusalem about 1000 BC and made it the capital of the Kingdom of Israel.

  4. After Israel split into Northern & Southern Kingdom, Jerusalem was the capital of the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

  5. Jerusalem is where the Jewish Holy Temple and Jewish religeous leaders were.

Jesus Lamenting over Jerusalem.

  1. Oh Jerusalem who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her….Matthew 23:37-39.

  2. Jesus must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and scribes…Matthew 16:21.

  3. Behold we go up to Jerusalem; and the son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. Matthew 20:17-19.

  4. The Son of Man must suffer many things…must be rejected by the Elders, Chief Priests and scribes, and He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Luke 9:22.

  5. Some Pharisees said to Jesus “leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.” Jesus replies “I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day-for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem. Luke 13:31-33.

  6. Jesus, to sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate, let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For we have no continuing city. but we seek one to come. Hebrews 13:12-14.

Old Testament references to killing of Prophets.

  1. I Kings 19:14 “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of Hosts…but the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, torn down your alters, and killed your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left and they are seeking my life.”

  2. Nehemiah 9:26 “They were disobedient and rebelled against you … they killed your prophets who had admonished them to return to you. They committed terrible blasphemies.”

  3. Jeremiah 26:20-23. The Prophet Uriah prophesied against the city. Jehoiakim the king sought to kill him. Uriah fled to Egypt. Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt and they fetched Uriah, brought him to the king who “slew him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.”

  4. Zechariah ben Jehoiada was killed by Jehoash near the altar of the Temple. II Chronicles 24:20-22.
