Jesus praying for His Disciples

Jesus prayed for His Disciples and His followers before going to Gethsemane. John 17:1-19.

This was Jesus’s longest prayer. Jesus is said to be praying at least 38 times in the Gospels.

  1. Jesus thanks the Father for empowering Him to give eternal life to His followers. vs. 1-3.

  2. Jesus has glorified the Father and finished His work on the earth. vs. 4-6.

  3. Jesus has given the Disciples God’s words and they have received them, and believed that The Father had sent Him. vs. 7-8.

  4. Jesus prays for them that the Father had given Him “for they are thine.” vs.9-10.

  5. As Jesus prepares to depart from the world to go to the Father, He has gives them God’s word. vs. 11-14.

  6. Jesus prays that God protects them from the evil one. vs. 15.

  7. Jesus declares them not of this world, and He is sending them into the world to preach the truth. vs. 16-19.

Jesus prayed for the Disciples ministry. John 17:20-26.

  1. Jesus prays for the Disciples and those that will believe on Him through the Disciples word. vs. 20.

  2. That they may be one in Christ as Christ is in the Father. vs. 21-22.

  3. That the world may believe that the Father had sent Jesus, and that God loved them as He loved Jesus. vs.23.

  4. Jesus intercedes for all those who come to God through Him. Hebrews 7:25.

Jesus’s final instruction to his Disciples before his ascension: “ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” Matthew 28:16-20.

Jesus’s Apostles followed Jesus’s instruction and scattered to spread the Gospel to the known world.

  1. Peter went to Antioch, establishing the first Gentile church, then to Corinth, then to Rome.

  2. Andrew, Peter’s brother came to be known as the Apostle to the Greeks.

  3. James the Great, the brother of John was a leader of the church in Jerusalem.

  4. John was scattered to the Island of Patmos. He was the author of the Gospel of John & the book of Revelation.

  5. Philip ministered to Greek-speaking communities.

  6. Bartholomew preached in different areas.

  7. Thomas the “doubting” apostle (John 20:24-28) is kown as missionary to India.

  8. Matthew is one of the four evangelists well known for his Gospel. He preached to various communities in the Mediterranean.

  9. James the less, authored the Epistle of St. James. He remained in Jerusalem after the other apostles were scattered. He became the first Bishop of the church in Jerusalem for several decades.

  10. Judas Thaddeus known as the “forgotten” apostle due to his name being the same as Judas Iscariot. He preached the gospel in various places. He is revered by the Armenian Church as “Apostle to the Armenians.”

  11. Simon the Zealot. Some believe he preached together with Judas Thaddeus as a team in Lebanon.

  12. Matthias was chosen by the apostles as the replacement apostle for Judas Iscariot. Acts 1:23-26. Matthias founded a church in Cappadocia.
