Look to the Rock

The Lord is my rock and my fortress, and my deliverer…and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. Psalm 18:2.

There are many references in the Bible that use the rock as a symbol of many of God’s characteristics including changelessness, strength and faithfulness. Also as the source of life, as shelter, and redeemer.

Key Old Testament verses.

  1. Moses instructed to strike the rock and water will come forth. Exodus 17:3-6. The rock referred to as Christ in I Corinthians 10:4.

  2. Of the rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee. Deuteronomy 32:1-4,18.

  3. For there is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. I Samuel 2:2

  4. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer. II Samuel 22:2.

  5. For who is God save the Lord? and who is a rock, save our God. The Lord liveth, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation. II Samuel 22:32&47.

  6. He brought me up out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock. Psalm 40:1-3.

  7. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer…and the horn of my salvation. Psalm 18:2.

  8. Who is God beside the Lord? And who is the Rock except for God? Psalm 18:31.

  9. To you Lord, I call; you are my rock. Do not turn a deaf ear to me. If you remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit. Psalm 28:1.

  10. Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go…for you are my rock and fortress. Psalm 71:3.

  11. Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord…to the Rock of our salvation. Psalm 95:1.

  12. Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord. Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn. Isaiah 51:1

Key New Testament verses.

  1. Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them…I will like him to a wise man that built his house upon a rock…Matthew 7:24-27.

  2. And I say unto thee that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church…Matthew 16:18.

  3. And did all drink…of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. I Corinthians 10:4.

  4. John’s vision of the new Jerusalem: The holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven…having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious…Revelation 21:10-11.

The cleft of the Rock

  1. God appears to Moses on mount Sinai. God places Moses in the cleft of the rock and covers him with His hand as God passed by. Exodus 33:13,17-23.

  2. Cleft of the Rock represents a shelter and deliverance for mankind povided by God.

  3. God reaching out and covering Moses with His hand represents deliverance for mankind as God reaches out through His Son Jesus Christ.

  4. Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. Let the water and the blood from thy wounded side which flowed, be of sin the double cure, cleanse me from it’s guilt and power. Hymn written by Augustus Toplady based on Moses’s encounter with God on Mount Sinai.
