SCATTERED SHEEP
Jesus’s final instruction to his Disciples before his ascension: “ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” Matthew 28:16-20.
Jesus’s Apostles Scattered to spread the Gospel to the known world.
Peter went to Antioch, establishing the first Gentile church, then to Corinth, then to Rome.
Andrew, Peter’s brother came to be known as the Apostle to the Greeks.
James the Great, the brother of John was a leader of the church in Jerusalem.
John was scattered to the Island of Patmos. He was the author of the Gospel of John & the book of Revelation.
Philip ministered to Greek-speaking communities.
Bartholomew preached in different areas.
Thomas the “doubting” apostle (John 20:24-28) is kown as missionary to India.
Matthew is one of the four evangelists well known for his Gospel. He preached to various communities in the Mediterranean.
James the less, authored the Epistle of St. James. He remained in Jerusalem after the other apostles were scattered. He became the first Bishop of the church in Jerusalem for several decades.
Judas Thaddeus known as the “forgotten” apostle due to his name being the same as Judas Iscariot. He preached the gospel in various places. He is revered by the Armenian Church as “Apostle to the Armenians.”
Simon the Zealot. Some believe he preached together with Judas Thaddeus as a team in Lebanon.
Matthias was chosen by the apostles as the replacement apostle for Judas Iscariot. Acts 1:23-26. Matthias founded a church in Cappadocia.
Jesus chose Saul of Tarsus as the replacement apostle for Judas Iscariot as Saul was on the way to Damascus to gather the Christians and bring them to Jerusalem to imprison them. Acts 9:1-6, 10-16. The apostle Paul founded several churches in Asia Minor, and wrote the books of Romans, 1st & 2nd Cornithians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1st & 2nd Thessalonians, Ist & 2nd Timothy, Titus, Philemon and probably Hebrews.
Final outcome for the Apostles.
Peter was martyred in the Circus of Nero about 64 AD in Rome. Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican is built on St.
Peter’s tomb.
Andrew was martyred at Patras on a cross in the shape of an X.
James the Great, the brother of John was killed with the sword by King Herod (Acts 12:1-2). He was the first martyred apostle.
John was the only apostle not to be martyred. He died 100 AD and buried near Ephesus.
Philip was martyred around 80 AD.
Bartholomew was martyred and his remains are located at the church of St. Bartholomew-in-the-Island, in Rome.
Thomas died around 72 AD. His tomb is located in Mylapore, India.
Matthew was martyred in Ethiopia. His tomb is in the cathedral in Salerno, Italy.
James the Less was stoned to death by the Jewish authorities in 62 AD. It is believed his tomb is at the St. James Cathedral in Jerusalem.
Judas Thaddeus suffered martyrdom around 65 AD in Beirut, Lebanon. Remains are in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Simon the Zealot was also martyred in Beirut, Lebanon 65 AD.
Matthias was beheaded with an axe in Colchis by the hands of pagans. Saul of Tasus who Was Chosen by Jesus to replace Judas Iscariot became the apostle Paul. He was beheaded in Rome.
Jesus, the Great Shepherd, chose the 12 Apostles to assist him during his 3 years of ministry, and prepare them to become his messengers after his death and resurrection. After his resurrection, he instructed them to scatter throughout the world and preach the Gospel of salvation to all nations. This would fulfill God’s eternal plan to provide redemption for sinful man.
Judas Iscariot, the 12th apostle chosen, would betray Jesus as part of God’s plan. Judas committed suicide, and Jesus appeared to Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus and called him to become the apostle to the Gentiles.
The apostles became the Sheep scatterd by their Shepherd to bring His message of salvation to all people.
