THE BOOK OF JOB.

The man Job Ch.1:2-5

  1. Character of Job-”Perfect & upright one who feared God and eschewed evil”

  2. Priest of the family-Offered sacrifices for his family in the event they sinned against God.

Satan before God. Ch.1:6-12.

  1. God asks Satan-"Hast thou considered my servant Job, there is none like him…a perfect and upright man.”

  2. Satan says you have blessed him in every way, “put thy hand against him and he will curse thee to thy face.”

  3. God says to Satan “all that he has is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand”Satan permitted to attack.

Satan attack. Ch.1:13-19.

  1. Oxen and asses stolen and servants killed by the Sabeans.

  2. Sheep and servnts killed by a fire from heaven.

  3. Camel’s taken and servants killed by the Chaldeans.

  4. Job’s sons and daughters killed by a great wind that tore the four corners of the house.

Job’s reaction: Ch.1:20-22.

  1. “Rent his mantle, shaved his head, fell to the ground and worshipped and said-naked came I from my mother’s womb and naked shall I return thither; the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

  2. “In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly”

Satan before God a second time. Ch 2:1-7.

  1. God says: Hast thou considered my servant Job…he stll holdeth his integrity although thou movest me against him.

  2. Satan says: “Put thy hand and touch his bone and flesh and he will curse thee to thy face.”

  3. The Lord said: “ Behold he is in thy hand but save his life.”

Satans personal attack on Job:

  1. Satan smote him with boils over his whole body. he sat in ashes.

  2. Job’s wife says: “Dost thou still retain thine integrity? Curse God and die.

  3. Job’s response: You speak as a foolish woman. Shall we receive good from God and not Evil?

Job and his three friends. Ch.2:11-13.

  1. They came saw him, did not recognize him, they wept, tore their mantles and sprinkled dust on their heads.

  2. They sat down for 7 days and 7 nights without speaking a word.

  3. Job then speaks and cursed his day. Why did I not die in my mothers womb?

  4. Eliphaz the Temanite speaks: He compliments Job then says: “Shall mortal man be more pure than his maker?” Job’s response: “Oh that God would loose His hand and cut me off then I would have comfort” Ch.6:8-9.

  5. Bildad the Shuhite speaks: Ch.8. “Does god pervert judgement, or the Almighty pervert justice.” vs.3.

    Job’s response: “How should man be just with God?” Ch.9:1. “My soul is weary of my life…” Ch.10:1.

  6. Zophar theNaamathite speaks. Ch.11. “Oh that God would speak & open His lips against thee.” vs.5.

    Job’s response: “I am as one mocked by his neighbor…” Ch.12:4. “A man is born of a woman is of a few days” Ch.14:1. “how long will ye vex my soul?” Ch.19:2.

  7. These 3 men cease to answer Job because ha was righteous in his own eyes. Ch.32:1

Elihu the son of Barachel then speaks in anger:

  1. “Job hath said I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgement.” Ch.34:5.

  2. “God is mighty and despiseth not any…” Ch.36:5.

  3. Job is silent.

The Lord answers Job out of the whirlwind.

  1. “Who is this that darkeneth council my words without knowledge?” Ch38:1

  2. “Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts?” Ch.38:36.

  3. “Doeth the eagle mount up at thy command?” Ch.39:27.

  4. The Lord answered Job: “Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct Him.” Ch.40;1.

  5. Job answers: “Behold I am vile what shall I answer Thee? I will lay my hand on my mouth.”

  6. God says to Job: “Gird up your loins now like a man…wilt thou disannul my judgement…cast abroad the rage of thy wrath…”

  7. Job answer the Lord and said: “I know thou canst do everything and that no thought can be withholden from thee. Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore I have uttered that I understand not: things too wonderful for me, which I knew not…wherefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes” Ch.43:1-6.

  8. God then says to Eliphaz: “My wrath is kindled against thee and thy two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has, therefore take seven bullocks and seven rams and go to my servant Job, and offer up for a burnt offering and my servant Job will pray for you.” They did what God commanded.

“The Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends; also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before…So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning…” Ch.42:10-12.

“After this Job lived one hundred and forty years and saw his sons, and his son’s sons for four generations. Job died being old and full of days” Ch.42:16-17.

BOOK OF PROVERBS

PROVERBS OF SOLOMON SON OF DAVID.

What made Solomon a wise man.

  1. He loved the Lord. I Kings 3:3.

  2. Prayed for understanding I Kings 3:9-12. His request pleased God. Not selfish. God gave him wisdom more than any before or after him.

  3. How did Solomon show his wisdom? Just administration. I kings3:16-28. e.g Two harlots and live son.

  4. Wrote Songs & Proverbs. I Kings 4:32. 1005 songs and 3000 proverbs.

Composition of Proverbs.

  1. Most written by Solomon. Proverbs Chapters 10-22 & 25-29.

  2. The sayings of the wise: Ch. 22:17 to Ch. 24:22-24.

  3. Agur the son of Jakeh-Chapter 30.

  4. King Lemuel Chapter 31:1-9.

Purpose: Ch. 1:2 To know wisdom and instruction, to receive understanding.

Key verse: Ch. 1:7. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Fools despise wisdom and understanding.

Thirteen lessons on wisdom.

  1. Shun evil companions. Ch. 1:8-19.

  2. Search for wisdom. Ch. 2:1-9.

  3. Maintain mercy and truth. Ch.3;1-10.

  4. Blessings of wisdom. Ch. 3:11-20.

  5. The effect of wisdom. Ch.3:21-35.

  6. His father’s wisdom. Ch.4:1-9.

  7. Abhor that which is evil. Ch.4;10-19.

  8. Cleave to the good. Ch.4:20-27.

  9. Avoid the strange(evil) woman. Ch.5:1-23.

  10. The seven deadly sins-marks of the evil person. Ch.6:1-19: He sins with his eyes, with his hands, with his heart, with his feet, he is a divider, he makes mischief, he is lazy.

  11. Dangers of the strange(evil) woman. Ch.6:20-35.

  12. How a young man falls victim Ch.7:1-27.

  13. The lesson of personified wisdom. Ch.8:1-36. Wisdom of the good woman compared to the strange woman.

Summary of the 13 lessons: The 7 pillars of wisdom that builds the house-wisdom’s feast & invitation. Ch.9:1-18.

  1. Knowledge.

  2. Discretion.

  3. Sound wisdom.

  4. Prudence (King James version-subtilty).

  5. Council.

  6. Instruction.

  7. Understanding.



BOOK OF ECCLESIASTES

Name means the Preacher.

Author: Son of King David, very probably Solomon.

KEY VERSES:

Ch. 1:8. The eye is not satisfied in the seeing, or the ear filled with hearing.

Ch. 1:9. …So there is nothing new under the sun.

Ch.1:14. I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and I behold all is vanity and striving after wind.

Ch.2:10-11. And all that my eyes desired I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from pleasure…thus I considered all my activities … and behold all was vanity and striving after wind.

Ch.2:16. … The wise man and the fool all die.

Ch. 3:19….The fate of the sons of man and the fate of beasts is the same.

Ch. 4:2-3. So I congratlated the dead…more than the living…better off is the one who has never existed who has never seen the evil activity that is done under the sun.

Ch. 7:29. Behold I have found only this, that God made men upright but they have sought out many devices.

Ch.8:23. It will not be well for evildoers and he will not lengthen his days because he does not fear God.

Ch. 11:19. Rejoice young man during your childhood … and during the days of your young manhood and follow the impulses of your heart and the desires of your eyes, yet know that God will bring you to judgement for all these things.

Ch.12:1. Remember your creator in the days of your youth before the evil days come and the years draw nigh when you will say “I have no delight in them.”

THE CONCLUSION OF THE WHOLE MATTER: Ch. 12:13-14

Fear God and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every work into judgement, with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.



THE SONG OF SOLOMON.

THE BRIDE IN THE KINGS CHAMBER. CH.1:1-2:7

Scene-wooded area, no Palestine near. The brides home is the the King’s summer hideaway. She says:

  1. Draw me, we will run together.

  2. Do not stare at me because I am black for the sun has burned me.

  3. He replies-how beautiful you are my darling.

MONOLOGUE OF THE BRIDE. Ch.2:8-3:5.

  1. The bride tells the chorus how she met the King: Ch.2:10.

  2. Arise my darling my beautiful one and come along.

  3. On my bed nite after nite I sought him whom my soul loved.

THE ROYAL WEDDING. Ch. 2:6-5:1.

The bride is brought to Jerusalem to be married to the King.

SEEKING AND FINDING. Ch.5:2-6:9.

  1. I was asleep but my heart was awake-she was dreaming.

  2. My beloved had turned away and had gone…I searched for him but did not find him.

  3. My beloved had gone down to his garden.

THE GREATNESS OF LOVE. Ch.8:6-7.

  1. Set me as a seal upon thy heart as a seal upon thy arm, for love is strong as death.

  2. Many waters cannot quench love.
