Jesus’s words to Mary His Mother

Jesus spoke to His Mother Mary on several occasion mentioned in the Bible.

Jesus comforts His Mother.

Jesus’s astonishing childhood event. Luke 2:41-51.

  1. At age 12 years, Jesus is taken to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. vs. 41-42.

  2. Mary, Joseph and kinfolks are returning to Nazareth but Jesus remains in Jerusalem. They return to Jerusalem to search for Him and are amazed to find Him in the Temple listening to and questioning the religeous leaders who were astonished at His understanding and answers. vs. 43-47.

  3. Mary says to Jesus: “Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.” vs. 48.

  4. Jesus’s response to His mother: “How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s house?”

The beginning of Jesus’s public ministry and first miracle. John 2:1-11.

  1. The wedding in Cana of Galilee. Mary was there, and Jesus and his disciples invited. vs.1-2.

  2. Mary says to Jesus “They have no wine”

  3. Jesus’s surprising response: “Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.” Jesus did not deify his mother as some Christian religions do.

  4. Jesus’s first miracle was in Cana of Galilee-his home: He turns water into wine. vs.7-11.

Jesus refers to His mother and brothers. Mark 3:31-35.

  1. His mother and brothers come looking for Jesus. vs.31.

  2. The multitude say to Jesus “thy mother and brethren are seeking thee. vs. 32.

  3. Jesus’s reply: “…whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.” vs.34-35.

Jesus’s last words to Mary. Mentioned only in the Gospel of John. John 19:25-27.

  1. This was Jesus’s last conversation while on the cross. vs.25.

  2. Jesus says to Mary “…behold thy son” vs.26. Referring to the Apostle John the son of Salome, the sister of Mary the mother of Jesus.

  3. To the apostle John he says … “behold thy mother.” John then takes Mary to his home. vs.27. Jesus provides for the care of his mother.

  4. Jesus had 4 brothers-James, Joses, Simon and Jude. They did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah during his life and were not present at his crucifixion. James and Jude would come to faith in Christ after his resurrection. James becomes the leader of the early church in Jerusalem. James and Jude each authored a book in the New Testament.
