The beginning of wisdom

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7.

The book of Proverbs is referred to as the book of wisdom.

Wisdom defined.

  1. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments. Psalm 111:10.

  2. Knowledge and discernment. Philippians 1:9-10.

  3. Knowing God. Romans 11:33-35.

Seeking wisdom.

  1. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…let him ask in faith. James 1:5-6.

  2. Pride leads to shame. With humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2

  3. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not. Proverbs 4:1-5.

  4. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee. Love her and she shall keep thee. Proverbs 4:6,11-12.

Source of wisdom.

  1. The Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6.

  2. Blessed are those who find wisdom. Proverbs 3:13.

  3. God teaches us wisdom. Proverbs 4:11.

  4. Wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle. James 3:17.

Worldly wisdom. I Corinthians 3:18-21.

  1. Worldly wisdom is deceptive. vs.18.

  2. The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. vs. 19.

  3. The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are vain. vs. 20-21.

Parable of Jesus referring to the wise man and the foolish man. Matthew 7:24-27

  1. The wise man built his house on the rock. vs. 24-25. A reference to Godly wisdom.

  2. The foolish man built his house on the sand. vs. 26-27. A reference to earthly wisdom.

  3. Hymnal- “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand”
