Jesus’ Unexpected Statements

JESUS’S FIRST UNEXPECTED STATEMENT.

FIRST UNEXPECTED STATEMENT BY JESUS-Luke 2:49

How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

When he was 12 years old they went to Jerusalem for the Passover. Luke 2:41-43.

Mary & Joseph returned but Jesus “tarried behind in Jerusalem.”

Mary & Joseph go back looking for Him and find Him in the temple “sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.”

Mary ask Him “Son why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. Luke 2:48.

Jesus replies with a quetion: “How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about My Fathers’s business”

Unexpected statement by a 12 year old. He reminds Mary & Joseph He is the Son Of God.

Jesus’s first recorded encounter with the Jewish teachers/religeous leaders: hearing them and asking them questions. They were astonished at His understanding and answers as a 12 year old.

What questions may Jesus have asked?

What answers may Jesus have given?

SON THY SINS BE FORGIVEN THEE-Mark 2:5-12

Healing of the paralytic

SON THY SINS BE FORGIVEN THEE-Mark 2:5-12 Healing of the paralytic

Jesus enters a home in Capernaum.

Large crowd including Teachers of the Law fill the house.

Healing of the paralytic lowered through the roof.

Jesus’s unexpected statement: Son thy sins are forgiven thee.

Jesus accused of blasphemy by the teachers of the Law for Jesus’s unexpected response.

Jesus asks a questionvs. vs 9: Is it easier to say sins forgiven or to say rise & walk?

Jesus’s intent to declare His Deity: “The Son of man hath power to forgive sin”

Old Testament Prophets & Apostles could heal but not forgive sin.

The paralytic healed, physically restored and enabled.

The crowd amazed and glorified God.

Jesus’s goal achieved.

THE UNFORGIVABLE SIN- Mark 3:14,20-30, Mt.12:22-37.

Setting: Jesus’s second tour of Galilee, ordained the 12 Apostles.

Jesus heals the demon possessed blind & dumb-Mt.12:22

The Scribes say Jesus has Beelzebub the prince of the devils by whom he casteth out devils Mk.3:22, Mt.12:24

Jesus’s respone: “HOW CAN SATAN CAST OUT SATAN?” A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. Satan will not cast out demons.

Jesus healing the demon possessed blind & dumb

Analogy of the strong man. Mk.3:27.

All sins of the sons of men even blasphemies can be forgiven. Mk.3:28.

Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost cannot be forgiven. Mk.3:29.

Jesus empowered by the Holy Ghost. Rejecting Christ is blasphemy of the holy Ghost which is THE UNFORGIVABLE SIN.

Blaspheme means vilify & speak evil.

Jesus is the Savior of man and the only means of Redemption.

TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU AND LEARN OF ME FOR I AM MEEK AND LOWLY IN HEART.... Mt.11:2

What was Jesus’s yoke? Seeking the lost. Reaching out to and restoring sinful man. Fullfilling God’s promises.

Is Jesus asking too much of his followers?

How can we do this? Follow Jesus’s leading and instruction to guide sinners to Jesus.

To do so we have to be meek, lowly in heart, and good examples of follwers of Jesus.

The outcome of seeking the lost: Some will become followers of Jesus. Others will not. Some refused Christ’s personal call.

The promised result: “Ye shall find rest unto your soul”. The outcome is in God’s hand.

SOME HERE WILL NOT SEE DEATH TILL THEY SEE THE KINGDOM OF GOD COME-Mark 9:1-8

Preparation for the Transfiguration vs.1

Selection of Peter, James and John-leads them up to a tall mountain. Why only the three?

Jesus transfigured vs.2,3.

Appearance of Elijah with Moses.

Moses represents the Old Testament period-Author of the Pentetuch: Genesis-Deuteronomy.

Elijah represents the post Mosaic era of the Prophets: Joshua-Malachia.

Moses & Elijah conversing with Jesus. What was the conversation?

fullfillment of their prophesies of the coming of the Redeemer/Savior.

Expections of the Old Testament saints fulfilled.

The OLD COVENANT and the NEW COVENANT coming together.

A preview of the Kingdom Of God for the Apostles.

Will be realized by His followers when Jesus The Christ rises from the dead.

Will be finalized at the SECOND COMING OF CHRIST.

NO MAN EAT FRUIT OF THEE HEREAFTER FOR EVER. Mark 11:12-14, Matt. 21:18-22.

Jesus’s final visit to Jerusalem.

The Triumphal Entry Mk. 11:2-11. Passed through the temple then went to Bethany.

Next day on the way from Bethany to Jerusalem He was hungry and went to a leafed out fig tree seeking fruit.

The fruitless fig tree. Jesus spoke to it: “No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever”. Disciples heard it.

Jesus goes to the Temple and cleanses it of the merchants: “Ye have made it a den of thieves”.

Place of Worship commercializes. Worship replace with profiteering.

Reaction of the Scribes & Chief Priests: “Who gave Thee authority to do this?” Matt 21:23-27.

Jesus’ response: “The Baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven or of men”? No answer.

“They sought how they might destroy Him” Mk. 11:18. Jewish religous leaders reject the Messiah.

The dead fig tree. Mk. 11-20-21. The cursed fig tree is dead the next day.

God expected spiritual fruit from his people: Isa. 27:6 “Jacob to take root & fill the face of the earth with fruit”

Fruitless fig tree represents spiritually unfruitful Israel and it’s religeous leaders.

Jesus would sacrifice Himself to atone for sinners and promises the Tree Of Life. Rev. 22:1-3.

The Tree of Life will bear 12 fruits…for the healing of the nations. There will be no more curse.

The throne of God & The Lamb shall be there and His servants shall serve Him.

Jesus came to redeem Israel and humanity & provide a means of restoring fellowship with God.

IT WOULD BE BETTER IF HE HAD NOT BEEN BORN. Mark 14:21

“The Son of Man will go as it is written … but woe to that man who betrays the son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.

Jesus must die for sinners.

He who betrays him must be born become a close friend of Jesus and fulfill the Old Testament prophesies.

Psalm 41:9 My own familiar friend whom I trusted which did eat of my bread hath lifted up his heel against me.

Did Judas have the option not to betray Jesus?

Peter denied Jesus 3 times but repented and was restored.

Judas had regrets after betraying Jesus but did not repent. He committed suicide. He hanged himself.

Was he doomed to hell?

Did he & others destined to eternal judgement motivate John Calvin’s doctrine with TULIP acronym?

Total Depravity

Unconditional Election

Limited Atonement

Irresistible Grace

Perseverence of the Saints

Calvinism vs. Arminianism: Election vs. Free Will. Presbyterian vs. Methodist.

IT IS WRITTEN THOU SHALL NOT TEMP THE LORD THY GOD Luke: 4:12

Satan tempting Jesus: Luke 4:1-13.

Turn this stone into bread.

This occurred after Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist. The Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove and led Him to the wilderness for 40 days.

After 40 days without food Jesus was hungered and must have been humanly exhausted.

Satan comes to Him to tempt Him. Three components to the temptation.

1. You are starving. If you are the Son of God turn this stone into bread.

Jesus’ response: It is written man shall not live by bread alone but by every Word of God.

2. Satan takes Jesus to a high mountain shows Him all the kingdoms of the world and says: this is my world, all power is given to me. I can give it to whom I will. I will give it to you if you will worship me.

Jesus’ response: It is amazing that Jesus does not challenge Satan’s claim. The earth is Satan’s domain but “The Most High rules in the kingdom of men” Daniel 4:25b.

Psalm115:16 “The highest heavens belong to the Lord but the earth hath He given to the children of men.”

Rom.10:26: “For the earth is the Lord’s and the fullnes thereof”

The earth is Satan’s domain but God restrains evil and overrules as He sees fit.

Jesus’ response: ''Get the behind me Satan: for it is written Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and Him only thou shalt serve”

3. Satan does not depart but takes Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem and says to Him if thou be the Son of God cast thyself down for it is written HE SHALL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE OVER THEE TO KEEP THEE AND IN THEIR HANDS THEY SHALL BEAR THEE UP LEST ANY TIME THOU DASH THY FOOT AGAINST A STONE.

Jesus’ response: It is said THOU SHALL NOT TEMPT THE LORD THY GOD.

Finally Satan departed from Jesus “for a season.” Not permantly.

Satan tries to bring Jesus down before He begins His ministry but he fails.

Why did Jesus allow Satan to tempt Him three times?

Having come to earth, Satan’s domain, and taken on human form He will suffer as a man.

Jesus needs to demonstrate His ability to rebuke and overcome Satan.

Jesus returnes in the power of the Spirit to Galilee to begin His ministry.

STRIVE TO ENTER IN AT THE STRAIT GATE. THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST & THE FIRST LAST. Luke 13:23-30

Self righteous

One person asks a question vs.23: Lord are there few that be saved?

Jesus’s answer vs.24: “Strive to enter in at the straight gate … for many will seek to enter in and shall not be able.”

Jesus’s statement in Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many there be that go in thereat. Narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

What is the strait gate? The straight and narrow gate is Jesus Christ the only way to God. John 14:6. “Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh to the Father but by me.”

What is the wide gate? All gates outside of Christ:

False religion. False prophets.

Religeous self righteous.

Agnosticism.

Atheism.

LET HIM WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE. John 8:1-11.

Jesus writing on the ground.

Jesus is teaching in the Temple courts.

Teachers of the Law and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery to Him and said “in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman”.

Why did Jesus bend down and started to write on the ground with His finger. The finger of God wrote the 10 commandments on stone at mount sinai. Jesus is symbolically telling them: I wrote the law.

Leviticus 20:10 says “the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife…the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.” The accusers of this woman who was probably a harlot have distorted the law to trap Jesus.

What did Jesus write on the ground? This is a mystery.

  1. Did He write Leviticus 20:10 to signal to them that He is God and rebuke them?

  2. Did he write down their names and their sins?

  3. Did He write “Which of you is without sin let him cast the first stone.”

Jesus tells them: “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone. Then stoops down to write more.

Their reaction-they walk away beginning with the eldest having been convicted by their own conscience.

Jesus says to the woman: “where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee?”

Her reply: No man, Lord. She recognized Jesus as Lord. The accusers did not.

Jesus final statement: “Neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more.”

Jesus having written the Law and having come to die for sinners and redeem them, he forgives her sin and tells he to go and sin no more.

FATHER FORGIVE THEM FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO. Luke 23:33-34.

Jesus was crucufied under Roman law at the insistence of the Jewish leaders.

This was God’s timing. Jesus came when Jews were under Roman rule. Jesus needed to be sacrificed by Jews and Gentiles because He came to pay for the sins of Jews and Gentiles-becoming the universal Redeemer of Adam’s seed.

The Jewish leaders did not know what they were doing.

The Roman leaders did not know what they were doing.

Why did Jesus ask for their forgiveness?

  1. They know not what they do.

  2. They are fulfilling the prophesies regarding Christ and God’s plan for the ages.

  3. Forgive them for crucifying me. Limited, specific forgiveness.

THE STONE THE BUILDERS HAVE REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE. Luke 20:9-19.

Parable of the owner of the vineyard.

  1. Owner of the vineyard appoints a husbandman and goes to a far country.

  2. He sends a servant to get fruit from the vineyard. He is beaten & sent away empty. sends a second & third servant which were also sent away empty.

  3. Finally sends His Son saying surely they will reverence Him. They decide to slay him and expect to inherit the vineyard.

  4. The Owner will come & destroy the husbandmen and give the vineyard to others.

The vineyard represents the people of Israel.
The owner of the vineyard is God.

The Son is Jesus Christ.

The husbandmen are the Jewish religious leaders.

The others to whom the vineyard is given: the Apostles and followers of Jesus.

The Stone that the builders rejected is Jesus Christ. He is the Cornerstone of the Church of God.
