The Pilgrim’s Progress was written by John Bunyan, 17th century English writer and Puritan preacher. The following is a brief overview of book one.
The book is an allegory of a man wandering in the backwoods and enters a deep sleep. He dreams of a man named Christian with a gteat burden on his back and a book in his hand.
He is visited by a man named Evangelist who tells him to leave his hometown, the City of Destruction, and go to the Celestial City on Mount Zion.
When Christian starts his pilgrimage he meets Wordly Wiseman who tries to force Christian to give up his religious foolishness.
Christian, in his journey meets Apollyon who wants to stop Christian from his pilgrimage. Apollyon symbolizes human subjection to worldly forces. He is contrasted to the Greek god Apollo the god of form and beauty that controls the worldly values.
Walking along the wall of salvation, Christian sees Christ’s cross and tomb. At this vision, his burden falls to the ground.
Christian meets Hopeful before entering the gates of Mount Zion. Christian and Hopeful have to cross a river with no bridge before entering Mount Zion. Hopeful saves Christian when he is about to sink.
The residents of the Celestial City joyously welcome the two pilgrims.
Walking by faith and guided by the Holy Spirit will keep the followers of Jesus Christ in the way.
