I have trodden the winepress alone. Isaiah 63:3.
Vineyard and winepress in the Bible.
Winepresses were widespread in the ancient world including Israel. They were near the vineyards. The grapes were crushed, the juice collected, fermented and preserved. The ancients often crushed the grapes by trodding them with their feet.
Wine was an important part of Jewish religeous ceremony. The Levites were to be given a portion of the harvest of the “threshing floor and of the winepress” Numbers 18:20-21 & 29-31.
When a Hebrew servant is released after seven years, he or she is to be given a share of the flock, threshing floor and of the winepress as blessings to be shared. Deuteronomy 15:11-14.
A song of my well-beloved concerning his vineyard…He expected it to produce good grapes, but it produced only wild grapes. Isaiah 5:1-6.
“The vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel.” He expected it to produce good grapes, but it produced only worthless ones. Isaiah 5:7.
Consequences of the worthless grapes: Israel will be humbled and goes into captivity. Isaiah 5:13,15-16.
Moab’s agony. Isaiah 16:2,10,14. Gladness and joy are taken away from the fruitful field; in the vineyard there, there shall be no cries of joy…no treader treads out wine in the presses, for I have made the shouting to cease.
Reason for Israel to rejoice is lost. Hosea 9:1-2. Threshing floor and wine press will not feed them, and the new wine will fail them.

The trodden winepress symbolic of judgement.
The Lord has trodden under foot all the mighty…The Lord has trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress. Lamentations 1:15. I weep…because the comforter is far from me…vs. 16.
The harvest is ripe. Come tread, for the winepress is full, the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great. Joel 3:11-13,17.
I have trodden the winepress alone…I will tread them in my anger, and trample them in my fury…Isaiah 63:1-7. God delivers judgement against Edom (vs1) to redeem and show goodness toward the house of Israel (vs.7).
The angel thrust his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. Revelation 14:19-20a.
…He will rule the nations with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God the Almighty. Revelation 19:15.
The word winepress appears in 20 verses in the Bible.
In the Old Testament, Israel was referred to as God’s vineyard planted to bear fruit for His glory, but bore false fruit and failed as a nation. Isaiah 5:7.
Today, Christ is the vine and believers are the branches. He that abides in Jesus bringeth forth much fruit. John 15:5.
At the end of time God will gather those that “followed the Lamb and were redeemed from among men being the first fruits unto God.” Rev. 14:4b.
God’s final judgement: The angel “gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.” Revelation 14:19.
God and God alone is the judge of His creation. Abraham pleads with God. Genesis 18:25.
God the Father has committed all judgement to the Son (John 5:22-23) who became a man to redeem humanity.
