Enabling by the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament:
Bezaleel for the Tabernacle-Exodus 31:3. “And I have filled him with the Spirit of God…”
The 70 Elders-Numbers 11:16-17. “I will take of the Spirit which is upon thee and will put it upon them”
Israel vexed the Holy Spirit- Isaiah 63:10,11
Balaam a false prophet blesses Israel- Num. 24:1-2. '“The Spirit of God came upon him.”
Othniel Delivers Israel- Judges 3:9-10…"The Spirit of the Lord came upon him.”
Came upon Gideon- Judges 6:34 “But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon…”
Empowered Jephthah- Judges 11:29. “Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah…”
Samson- Judges 15:14-16. “The Spirit of the lord came mightily upon him…”
Saul anointed- 1 Samuel 10:10, 11:6. “The Spirit of God came upon him..”
David anointed- 1 Samuel 16:13. “The Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.”
David’s plea- Psalm 51:1,11-13 Create in me a clean heart & take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Isaiah- Isaiah 59:21 “My Spirit that is upon thee shall not depart out of thy mouth.”
Ezekiel 2:1-2 and again Ezekiel 3:24,27. “And the Spirit entered into me when He spake to me.”
Daniel 5:11-14. “ There is a man in thy kingdom in whom ia the Spirit of the holy gods.”
Can a person lose the Holy Spirit ?
The Holy Spirit left Samson- Judges 16:20-21. He wist not that the Lord had departed from him.
The spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul. I Samuel 16:14.
In the old Testament the Holy Spirit anointed individuals to empower them to accomplish their mission. This was clearly temporary in the case of Balaam the false prophet.
NEW TESTAMENT TEACHING:
Jesus baptised: Mat.3:16 …The Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove.
Pentecost: Acts 2:1-4 The Holy Spirit descended on the disciples.
Promise of Jesus fulfilled: John 15:26 & 16:7-8. The comforter will come when I go away.
Romans 8:9 … if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ he does not belong to Him.
1 Corinthians 12:3 … no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:13-For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, Jews or Greeks.
CONCLUSIONS:
OLD TESTAMENT: The Holy Spirit was active in the old Testament from the day of creation to the coming of the savior Jesus Christ. The Holy Spiri EMPOWERED certain individuals to accomplish God’s call and mission.
NEW TESTAMENT: Jesus Christ ushered in the Holy Spirit and empowers the Holy Spirit to INDWELL all who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Redeemer and Savior of the world.
