Crucified with Christ
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20
Christ was crucified on Golgotha.
Apostle Peter was crucified in Rome.
Apostle Paul was beheaded because he was a Roman citizen.
All the apostles were martyred except John.
History of crucifixion.
Probably originated with the Assyrian Empire in the 8th century B.C..
Also practiced by the Babylonian and Persian Empire that followed.
Alexander the Great brought it to the Middle East in the 4th century B.C.
The Phoenicians introduced it to Rome in the 3rd century.
The Roman Empire practiced crucifixion except for Roman citizens.
Crucifixion has been done in parts of the world as recently as the 21st century. Christians are crucified in some cultures because they are followers of Jesus who was Crucified.
Why must Jesus die on the cross?
Jesus the Son of God came to redeem sinful man.
Jesus walked among men, preached the Gospel of salvation to return sinful man to a Holy God.
Jesus reached out to Jews and Gentiles,
Jesus was rejected by the Jewish religious leaders, accused of blasphemy because He claimed to be the Son of God, and was condemned to death.
Jewish excecution was by stoning. Roman execution was by crucifiction.
When Christ came, Israel was under Roman rule. Jewish leaders tell the Roman Governer Pilot: Crucify him.
Jesus must die at the hands of Jews and Gentiles because He came to redeem all mankind, Jews and Gentiles, to fulfill God’s promise to Abraham “in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” Gen. 12:1-3.
Jesus must be sacrificed to fulfill the prophecy “The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” Revelation 13:8.
Christ’s death on the cross redeemed sinful man. Romans 6:3-8…“Knowing this that our old man was crucified with Him…that we shall also live in Him”
