The Shepherd King

The Shepherd King of Israel. I Samuel 16:1-13.

  1. The Lord sends the prophet Samuel to the house of Jesse of Bethlehem to annoint one of his sons a King. vs. 1-3.

  2. Jesse introduces his 7 sons starting with the oldest but God refuses to annoint them. vs. 4-10.

  3. Samuel asks Jesse if he has another son. Jesse says “He is the youngest and he keepeth the sheep.” Samuel sends for him. vs. 11-12.

  4. The Lord tells Samuel to annoint him and the “Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day foreward.” vs. 13.

God’s Covenant with David. II Samuel ch. 7.

  1. David tells the prophet Nathan that he wants to build a house for the Lord. Nathan approves. vs.1-3.,

  2. The Lord has Nathan deliver a message to King David: “I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep to be ruler over my people….and when thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee…and thy house and thy kingdom shall be established forever…vs. 4-13. Fullfilled in Christ.

  3. From shepherd of the sheep to sustainer of Israel, God’s inheritance. Psalm 78:70-72

Prophecy of the Branch of David

  1. There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. Isaiah11:1.

  2. The Saviour came into the world “as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground” Isaiah 53:2-6.

  3. Days of the coming of the Branch of Righteousness. Jeremiah 23:5-6, Zechariah 3:8.

  4. The man whose name is the Branch…he shall build the temple of the Lord…and shall sit and rule on His throne. Zechariah 6:12

The Good Shepherd comes to deliver His sheep. Philippians 2:5-8.

  1. Jesus the son of God took the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of man. vs. 7

  2. He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. vs 8.

  3. The knowlege of God is through Jesus Christ. 2Cor. 4:6.

The second coming of The Shepherd King.

  1. He shall descend from heaven…and the dead in Christ shall rise first. 1 Thessalonians 4:16.

  2. Those alive will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. I Thessalonians 4:17.
