Moses early years

God prepares Moses to bring the children of Israel from Egypt.

Baby Moses delivered from the river and adopted by Pharoah’s daughter.

Jacob’s family of 70 brought to Egypt by Joseph to escape famine.

This was God’s plan to allow them to multiply.

After 215 years they had become a great people of about 2 million.

A pharaoh that “knew not Joseph” enslaved them and made their lives bitter.

Pharaoh instructs the Hebrew midwives to kill every male newborn.

Moses is born to the wife of a man of the tribe of Levi. Exodus 2:1-10.

  1. When she saw that he was a “a goodly child she hid him three months.”

  2. When she could no longer hide him she made an ark of bullrushes and placed him on the river bank.

  3. Pharaoh’s daughter sees the baby crying and had compassion on him.

  4. Moses’s sister who was watching him asks Pharaoh’s daughter if she could get her a woman to nurse the baby.

  5. Moses’s mother nurses Moses. after he grew she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter & he becomes her son.

After Moses grows up he sees an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew brother and kills the Egyptian.

Pharaoh learns about this and seeks to kill Moses. Moses flees to the land of Midian.

Moses in the land of Midian. Exodus 2:16-22.

  1. Moses meets the daughters of the priest of Midian at a well.

  2. He delivers them from the shepherds and waters their flock.

  3. The priest of Midian gave one of his daughters, Zipporah, to be Moses’s wife.

  4. She bears Moses a child he calls Gershom: “for I have been a stranger in a strange land.”

Moses and the burning Bush. Exodus 3:1-10.

  1. Moses kept the the flock of Jethro his father-in-law the priest of Midian.

  2. he led the flock to the backside of the desert and came to Horeb the mountain of God..

  3. The angel of the Lord and the burning bush.

  4. God speaks to Moses from the burning bush: I am the God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob.

  5. I have seen the affliction of my people…I am come down to deliver them out of Egypt…

  6. Come now I will send thee to Pharaoh to bring my people out of Egypt.

Moses’s reluctance.

  1. Who am I to go to Pharaoh? Exodus 3:11-14.

  2. They will not believe me. Exodus 4:1-9.

  3. I am not eloquent. Exodus 4:10-17.

Moses resolves to return to Egypt. Exodus 4:18-23.

  1. Moses’s father-in-law, Jethro said to Moses “go in peace.”

  2. Moses instructed to address Pharaoh.

  3. Moses takes his wife and sons and heads to Egypt.

Moses’s return interrupted. Exodus 4:24-26.

  1. At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses and sought to kill him.

  2. Zipporah takes a sharp stone, circumcises her sons, casts the foreskin at Moses’s feet and says “thou art a bloody husband to me.”

  3. Zipporah says “a bloody husband thou art because of the circumcision.”

  4. Circumcision was the seal of the Abrahamic covenant. Genesis 17:9-12.

  5. Why did Moses fail to circumcise his sons? He may have been negligent or His wife or father in law, the priest of Midian, objected to the circumcision.

Moses reurns to Egypt. Exodus4:27-31.

  1. God sends Aaron to meet Moses.

  2. Moses tells Aaron all the words of the Lord and the signs He had commanded him.

  3. Moses & Aaron gather the elders of Israel and spoke the words of the Lord to them.

  4. The people believed, bowed their heads and worshipped.
