Triumphal Entry

On the way to the cross

Triumphal Entry of Jesus John 12:1-18, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:41-44.
The last 10 chapters of John’s gospel deal with the last week of Jesus’s life.

Passover was a major Jewish holiday. The week of passover sees Jews streaming to Jerusalem.

Six days before Passover Jesus, on the way to Jerusalem, stops at Bethany where Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead. Bethany is at the foot of Mount Olives, 2 miles from Jerusalem.

Lazarus & his sisters Mary & Martha made Him a supper. Many Jews came to see Jesus and Lazarus.

  1. Mary anoints the feet of Jesus. John 12:3-8.

  2. Judas objects.

  3. Jesus’s response. vs. 7.

  4. Mary’s awareness. John 11:53,57.

The next day “much people heard that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees went forth to meet Him and cried. HOSANNA: BLESSED IS THE KING OF ISRAEL THAT COMETH IN THE NAME OF THE LORD”. John 12:12-13. Hosana means Lord save us.

Jesus riding on the colt of an ass. John 12:14, Luke 19:29-31. Refer to the prophecy of Zechariah. Zech. 9:9. A colt indicates humility.

The Jews were hoping that Jesus, the Son of King David, would be the new King of Israel that would deliver Israel from the rule of the Roman Empire. II Samuel 7:12-13 speaks of David’s Seed.

Jesus weeps over Jerusalem and predicts it’s destruction which occurs in 70 A.D. Luke 19:41-44.

Jesus makes a statement that surprises the people: “Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour, but for this cause came I unto this hour, but for this cause came I unto this hour…and if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me ” John 12:27&32. The new Davidic Kingdom.

The people answered him: “ we have heard out of the law that Christ abideth forever: how sayest thou, the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?” John 12:34-35.

The people were hoping for and expecting a new earthly Davidic kingdom to deliver them from Rome.

Jesus came to die for sinners, redeem sinful man and restore man’s fellowship with God-His first coming.

Christ will come again. The second coming of Christ will restore and fulfill the Davidic Covenant.

It will fulfill God’s promise to David in 2 Samuel 7:12-13. “And when thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”

After His resurrection, Jesus replaces the Davidic covenant based on the Mosaic Law with the new covenant of Grace for all who come to faith in the Risen Lord, the Redeemer of sinful man. This Kingdom will extend into eternity.
