What think ye of Christ?
Jesus responds to the Jewish leaders questioning him. Matthew Ch. 22:41-46.
Majority of the Jewish leaders (The Scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees) opposed Jesus and his ministry.
Examples of the Jewish leaders questioning Jesus.
The Scribes were learned men who studied, transcribed and taught the Law of Moses. They did add man-made traditions. The Scribes participated in the binding of Jesus and delivering him to Pilot. Mark 15:1.
The Pharisees question Jesus about paying Roman taxes. Matthew 22:15-22.
A Pharisee, who was also a lawyer questions Jesus in asking him “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?” Matthew 22:34-40.
The Sadducees, who believed there is no resurrection, question Jesus about the dead widow of the seven brothers that had died childless. Matthew 23:23-28.
Jesus’s answer: “ in the resurrection…they are as the angels of God in heaven… God is the God of the living. Matthew 23:29-32.
Jesus responds to the Jewish leaders when they gathered together. Matthew 23:41-46.
Jesus asks them, what think ye of Christ? who’s son is he. vs. 42a.
Their reply: “The son of David.” vs. 42b. Jesus had been denied being the Christ because he came from Galilee. John 7:40-43.
Jesus then asks them: “How then did David in the spirit call him Lord saying, the Lord said unto my Lord sit thou on my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool?” vs. 43. The spirit is the Holy Spirit speaking through David.
Jesus quoted Psalm 110:1-2,4. The Lord is God the Father. My Lord is the Messiah-God’s anointed one. Messiah in Hebrew means anointed.
The Messiah is the priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Melchizedek means king of righteousness-the priest-king. Psalm 110:4. Melchizedek appeared to Abraham after the battle of the kings to bless Abraham. Genesis 14:18-20.
Melchizedek appearing to Abraham is thought by theologians to be the pre-incarnate Christ.
Jesus came to his own, but his own received him not. but as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. John 1:11-12
